HAL KOENIG was a painter of urban landscapes, natural landscapes and portraits, primarily in oil. He died suddenly from heart arrest on March 25, 2019. He was resident artist and owner at Oil Gallery in Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward, which remains open under the stewardship of his husband, Robert Schwoch.

Hal received the Painting Award at the 2015 and 2017 Third Ward Art Festivals; one of five top awards from Kohler's Midsummer Festival as well as the painting award from Lake Geneva's Art in the Park in 2014; and in 2013, Hal earned the Hidden River Art Festival's  Jurors' Choice Award and Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts' Best in Painting award.
